For seemingly no reason at all, the comma key on my Microsoft Comfort
Curve keyboard (USB) will suddenly stop working on my WinXP SP2
computer. Holding it down for a minute doesn't restore it.

Before, I could uninstall it in Device Manager and plug it into a new
USB port and that restored my comma key. But then the New Hardware
Detected wizard came up for a re-install. Now the wizard doesn't come
up and using another USB port doesn't work. What works, oddly, is this,
as I found out by testing: plugging the keyboard into a different
computer! Yes, after I do that (where it happens that the New Hardware
Detected wizard comes up), I can plug it back into my main computer and
suddenly the comma key works!

Any ideas on this? What's causing it, how to prevent it, how at least
to get the New Hardware Detected wizard back for this device, why does
it work after I put it into a different computer.

You might just have a failing keyboard (contacts inside) and
moving it about a bit temporarily rectifies the situation?

Next time, try grasping both ends of the keyboard in your
hands and twisting it slightly, one end at a time, while
pressing the comma key.

Otherwise, try a different keyboard, it still seems that one
is flaky if another works.

Boot in Safe Mode. Could be you are loading software that causes the
problem. I trialed ClipMagic for awhile and kept wondering why my
underscore key stopped working. Yep, turned out to be ClipMagic.
Anything that you install that inserts itself in the keyboard buffer
chain can screw up the keyboard's behavior.
