Odd mouse behavior in excel

when clicking on a cell in excel 2000 and then moving the
mouse around the screen, all the cells between the cell
that was clicked and the cell the mouse is hovering over
get selected. how do i stop this from occurring. no keys
are currently depressed. sticky mouse accessability
function is turned off. using standard ps2 2 button
mouse. this is happening even after rebooting pc.

The issue isn't that it's selecting the cells between when
clicking, it doesn't allow me to make the 2nd cell
selection. it's highlighting all the cells between the
first cell selected and any cell i hover the mouse over.

does this resolution apply to this case?

yes - although it isn't always the cause of the problem.

I've also seen the problem where the solution was a new mouse driver and
also where there is no apparent cause but restarting the machine "made it go
away" ... however, your situation seems to me to be either faulty mouse,
faulty driver or scroll lock key as it is both persistant & consistent.
