Odd Formating ???

At least I think this is a formatting problem with Excel 2003. I have a
database with about 5 columns containing numbers. Some are directly entered
others are from a cut & paste. All of the columns appear fine except one.
In about 1/2 the cells in this column (no difference whether they were
entered directly or cut & paste) they appear as follows:

There is a small wedge in the upper left corner of the cell similar to a
comment indicator that would be in the upper right. The wedge is a light
gray is if it is not active. When I select the cell a small rectangular box
containg a diamond shape with an exclamation point in it appears to the left
of the cell and disappears when you select another cell.

What is this & how do I get rid of it?

If you click on that diamond shape you'll see what Excel thinks is wrong
with the cell. Probably it is a number entered as text

And to get rid of it go to tools>options>error checking
