Odd Delay in Bootup: XP Home/SP2

I have a Gateway 700XL, running XP Home/SP2. 2.2 GHz Pent. 4, 1gb RAM. The
system is pretty well-maintained. All critical updates installed.

Lately I have noted an odd delay when booting: the initial screen showing
boot options (Windows or Recovery Console are the available options) shows
the 10-second countdown as it normally does. But when it gets to 0, instead
of immediately starting the boot into Windows, there is about a 20-second
delay where nothing at all seems to be happening. I don't believe there is
any disc access. After about 20 seconds it then boots normally into
Windows.

Not a biggie, but annoying when I'm doing some trouble-shooting. Any idea
where this could be coming from?

have you tried setting your cmos/bios options to fast startup. because of
the ram, the bios may have an option to skip the ram check and speed up your
ram and maybe set it to overdrive.....

I previously looked through the BIOS settings, and everything seemed
correct. I'll have another look with your comment in mind.

That said, I believe the delay is occurring well after that stage of the
bootup, and it didn't use to be this way (I've had this box for over 4
years).

As I indicated, after the normal speed initial boot, the screen comes up (I
don't know what it's called) which shows the boot options available (in my
case Windows XP and Windows Recovery Console), and shows the 10-second
count-down (which is the correct setting as shown in the boot.ini file).
But then instead of immediately starting the Windows boot process, it sits
at that same screen for about 20 seconds, and then it disappears, and boots
normally into Windows.

Again, not a biggie, but if I can eliminate what appears to be a needless
delay, so much the better.
