New Epson Stylus CX3810 does not come with OCR!
Is there a freeware program out there that does a decent job of
word recognition when scanned to Word?

TIA

Not really Sylvia. There is this one:

http://www.simpleocr.com/

Download link is:

http://www.charactell.com/scanstore/InstSocr.exe

but the program's accuracy has been criticized by many in this group.

I don't reply to trolls like Andy Mabbett or Doc (who uses sock puppets)
for instance. No adware, cdware, commercial software, crippleware,
demoware, nagware, PROmotionware, shareware, spyware, time-limited
software, trialware, viruses or warez for me, please.

I tried it with Open Office and was not impressed. Maybe I did not have
it set correctly, who knows? It was not a fun project.

I tried it back when it was SimpleOCR and found the error rate to be
unacceptable. Maybe it's been improved by now or maybe scanning only a
particular font is called for. One of these days I'll give it another
shot and see if I can do anything to improve it's accuracy.

The free online DocMorph
(http://docmorph.nlm.nih.gov/docmorph/docmorph.htm) system works pretty
well. It is a service of the National Library of Medicine. You need
to scan at 300 DPI or better. Also if you have it, the OCR inherent in
the "Send Text to Word" Command on the 2003 Microsoft Office Tools,
Document Imaging applet (the command is on the Tools Menu), works
pretty well.

John, sorry about the reference to MS Office. I din't read your
signature until just now.

I just looked around, and it probably was available for free at one
point, but Abby has probably gone around and made it unavailable.

Hi John,

Hint, copy the URL into clipboard and google that URL, then hit

I dunno Dewey, I think it's going to be an Italian version. Hope I'm
wrong. Let me know though, huh? Abby Finereader is supposed to be a real
good OCR program.

I had Abby FineReader Sprint that I got with my Epson scanner. Just
tried this Fine Reader Pro today...choose english in the installation
routine, works great. You even get the Abby Forms software to batch scan
with templates to a db file. My version of the liteware Sprint was 6.0
and the Pro 4.0 has almost the same interface just lots more
capabilities. One tip ...get the license before you start the install.
Necessary right away ..not enter the key after.

Yaaay!!!
I did it!
Went there, got it, used it!
It even corrected some typos in the original!

I would have registered, but it did not give 4.0 pro as a choice.

Thanks to all who had input! I am a happy camper11

Dave,
Thanks for replying. I'm downloading as I type this. As for the
registration, I guess I just moved to Salerno. 80)>

Don't like the popup message that results when I try to submit my
registration info (in English):
______________________________
Attention: If you to recevere information you must give ta the
authorization, otherwise not to specify your email.
______________________________

In other words, you must put a checkmark by "I wish to be informed from
Novadys/ABBYY on offering special, promotions and innovation" if you
want to be able to submit your application for the registration code.
Either that, or you simply don't give them your email address because
after you turn in your registration info you get this message
(translated to English here):
______________________________
Dear reader of IlSoftware_it, thanks for to have compiled the module. In
order to verify the correctness of your data it has been sended one to
you demanded of confirmation to the address (my email address removed).
After your confirmation you will be enrolled to newsletter the Novadys.
If the demand for confirmation within 24 hours does not arrive you it
tries ricompilare the module. Verification moreover that your address is
written correctly and that your case of mail is not full. This is your
personal code of activation of the free licence of FineReader: (code
removed) Conserve this code also after the installation of the software,
will be useful in order to obtain technical attendance through email and
in the case you had reinstallare the product. Good job with FineReader!
______________________________

As you can see, this is the point at which you get the registration, not
via email. On the other hand, I gave them my email address so I don't
know if leaving both it and the checkmark out of the registration
applcation will work. Somebody else should try this first.

Not sure what "If the demand for confirmation within 24 hours does not
arrive you it tries ricompilare the module" means, but probably it's
just that the subscription will be canceled.

Oh well.

Many thanks again, Dave!

You can get this

it is a free license of an earlier version

El Bandelero,
Many thanks for posting this. As Dave pointed out further down in the
thread, English can be specified during the installation.

If anybody else is interested in downloading this program, be sure to
translate the page in a tab next to the actual page. That way, you can
click on the links on the actual page and know what they're talking
about. You'll need to do this because clicking on the links in the
translated page doesn't work and you need to obtain the registration
code by clicking on the "questa pagina" link in the line that says:

"- registrarsi presso questa pagina specificando un indirizzo e-mail
valido. In questo modo, nel giro di pochi minuti, si riceverà il numero
di licenza personale che consentirà di sbloccare l'installazione di
FineReader 4.0;"

about 1/4 of the way down the page.

You should read my reply to Dave further down this thread too.

Thanks again, El Bandolero!

I downloaded it after 4 unsuccessful attempts, but can't install it.
Install.exe keeps asking for an installation cd in drive Z, no matter

OK, an update, like you found out (yeah, I read later posts) it can be
in English, and as you said the activation code is on the web page.
Program installed and came up fine with no problems (in English).

It's been over 24 hours for me, I haven't received anything at my
throw away addy.

BTW, I "live" in Bolonga, Salerno is nothing bit a gulf here. <grin>

Another alternative might be to use a temporary email address, like at
trashmail.com .

I always use http://www.jetable.org/en/index for any email that I'm not
sure of.It forwards to whatever email addy you supply but best of all
you stipulate how long the addy is good(one hour, day, week, month)

Hmmm. Mighty strange. Other people don't seem to be having that problem.
And you're unable to browse for the location of the "CD" so that you can
navigate back to the location of the installation files where you have
them?
