Occasionally sends from wrong account

We have a number of people with Outlook 2003, a pop email account set
to use our ISP as the SMTP, and an Exchange email address too. We
don't really use the Exchange addresses they're just for sharing group
calendar. Most of the time when people send it goes out through the
ISP account but occasionally it chooses to send it as if they were
sending from the Exchange account. Because we never set Exchange to
talk to the outside world the mail looks like it went but goes
nowhere. This has happened to numerous people over months. I've told
them about verifying what address is chosen as the "from", verified
the ISP account is their default, asked if they had errors on these
occasions, like was the ISP unavailable, it just seems to be random.

If the message is sent to someone that is on the server outlook will try to
send using exchange.

Why not configure exchange to send (you can set it use the isp's smtp
server) and set up the SMTP address in the exchange accts to the external
address. Let all mail go out using exchange - it will be delivered correctly
and replies from outside users will go to the ISP mailbox.

So even if I'm sending mail from me@our_isp.com to someone else in the
office who is them@our_isp.com Outlook will scan to see if I have an
Exchange account, and if so, if the other person also has one, and
then won't use SMTP our_isp.com? I guess that could explain it
although it seems like it's been only occasionally and I think some
email between these folk has gone through, but I would have to check
that. I could understand there being such an option, to go through
Exchange, so you can, for instance, record all email between people in
the office, but how counter-intuitive to do by default. Is there a way
to turn this off?

yes, that's more or less how it works. it may also happen when users pick a
name from the GAL instead of the contacts folder. It can't be turned off -
but the problem would go away if exchange was configured to send to the
internet (very simple to do - use smart host to send it to the ISPs SMTP
server). Then it wouldn't matter which acct sent the message.

I guess I'll setup the SMTP just to avoid the problem. I'm not aware
of how you choose an address from the GAL instead of the contacts. Is
the GAL what you get when you go to the address book instead of
contacts? Or what you get from the "TO" link within the composition
window? I have the contacts set to show up as an address book so I
guess I'm not sure where one vs the other gets accessed.

The GAL and contacts show in the address list - I find it easy to get into
the wrong address list accidently - maybe its because I use several and I'm
always changing between them.
