apparently I need a particular hotfix:
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 835717
but I do not see how to obtain it. The problem has corrupted my spell-checker, which I badly need, and worse, have come to rely upon.

As is the case for all MS hotfixes, you need to call Product Support
Services and request it. The link in the "Hotfix Information" section
<http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;[LN];CNTACTMS>
eventually leads you to a page where you can find the right contact
number. To save you some slogging through unfriendly web pages, the
number in the US is 800-936-4900; outside the US, see
http://microsoft.com/worldwide.

The paragraph that talks about costs is unnecessarily scary. If you
confine your discussion to requesting the hotfix, and don't ask any
questions about unrelated problems, there will not be any charge for
the support call.

Thank you - you're a life saver.
