This only happens on my home page which is MSN.com. When I click on an item I
receive the error message "Object Moved". "The Document May Be Found Here". I
am running Windows XP Pro SP1. I have disabled Norton Anti Virus and Spam
Killer but the problem still occurs. Any help appreciated.

Hi bobbyd :)

You may have a hijacker, malware, spyware or parasites on your system
causing this problem. Thus, in addition to running your updated anti-virus
program, you should do the following to be sure none of these are present on
your system. Although you may have already run one or more of the programs,
please do so again according to the instructions below. Some variants of
malware can replicate themselves over and over if not removed properly.
Please follow all instructions carefully to be sure your system is
thoroughly cleaned:

Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
Be sure to run CWShredder, Ad-aware and Spybot.
If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.
(or Spybot - Search and Destroy DSO Exploit Fix 1.3.1 TX)

Also be sure to use the HijackThis. Please do not post your log to this

or the Aumha HiJackThis forums

to allow the experts there to evaluate your log and advise you of the
necessary steps to clean your system.

Also this program searches for hidden .dlls that recreate the malware.

(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill

enable you to regain your connection.

NOTE: If you can not download these programs from the Internet, if your PC
has CD read capabilities, go to another computer with CD-ROM burning

Copy the HOLD folder to your HD and then install the programs from there
and run them. After you have IE access again, update all programs where
possible to get the latest definitions and run them again in Safe Mode to be

Thanks Jan for all of the info. I have three of the utilities you mentioned,
and I downloaded the others. I am still having the same problem. I have heard
that Norton may cause this problem so I disabled the AntiVirus and AntiSpam
but it did not help. I did a clean install about three months ago and had the
problem right from the get go It only happens on the MSN home page. Any more
ideas? Thanks in advance.

Hi bobbyd :)

The problems with many of the .com sites is somewhat puzzling, and so far
there has not been one-fix-all for them. However, there are some methods
that have worked for many. I'm providing some information that 'might'
help. You can review it and ignore anything that does not apply to your
immediate machine set up or connection type. I'm truly sorry that I can't
be more specific, but, this is such an elusive type of problem from each
machine and connection situation. Hopefully, there will be something here
that will help:

Can't connect to MSN
http://help.msn-int.com/EN_US/HelpW...S_Text=For+help+on+signing+in,+click+a+topic:

or..........

Tools>Internet Options>Security>Advanced>Custom Level> change all the
ActiveX Controls setting to the following down the list:

Change the following in order down the list:
Prompt
Disable
Disable
Prompt
Prompt

also.........

#1.-- You need to be logged on as an Administrator if running Windows XP
(have Full Rights) otherwise you will be limited to "Chat" and will not be
able to Modify/Delete/Change Files or transfer/send or receive files,
E-mails etc.

#2.-- Go To START >RUN> type in the Input window: ReGsvr32.exe softPUB.DLL "

#3.-- Change the Internet Explorer Settings: Tools>Internet
Options>Security>Setting> and set to Medium or Low...

#4.-- Uninstall MSN Messenger... Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs>
find MS Messenger and uninstall it.

#5.-Repair Internet Explorer. Then reinstall MSN messenger... NOT the beta
v6.

#6.-- If you are using a proxy, make sure the settings are correct. If you
use LAN, then check to be sure the "Proxy server" box is Unchecked.

and.......

Tools>Internet Options>Security>Advanced>Custom Level> change all the
ActiveX Controls setting to the following down the list:

Allow active content to run in files on My Computer - Windows XP Service
Pack 2:

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Yes, that is true. And I have tried to find other instances of it happening
in XP, but, so far I have not had much luck in finding anything that points
to a specific situation. Let me research this a bit more and I'll get back
with you soon. :)

I pleaded the case for help from the experts on this subject here, and this
is what is being suggested to resolve the issue:

Courtesy of PA Bear -

Longtime/ongoing bug on MSN's end.
http://groups.google.com/groups?q="...up=microsoft.public.*&c2coff=1&sa=G&scoring=d

Fixes:

1. Use a non-MSN homepage

2. Use www.member.msn.com as homepage (requires sign-in)

3. Sign in to MSN Messenger (.NET Passport) first.

4. Upgrade to MSN Messenger v6.2.0137 in WinXP SP2

I'm sorry, but, I'm afraid that this is the best I an offer to resolve this
issue. Even though you may have MSN Messenger, uninstall it and reinstall
it, using the version listed here.

What is your "home page" exactly? A Favorite or other saved link?
If so the redirect you are getting may be informing you that the format
of the link has changed and hence it would be a chance to update the
saved link to the new link.

Hint: If you are just typing msn.com in the Address bar make sure that
that isn't matching with MSN.com.URL (e.g., if you have a Favorite
by that name.)

Tip: normally the URL suffix for Favorites is hidden. To avoid the
confusion that this can cause, you might want to use Folder Options
to check Always show extension in the Edit File Type dialog for
the URL: Internet Shortcut file type. (Run... control folders
and use the the File Types dialog to get into that subdialog.)

Without that option you can still get a clue that typing MSN.com
is going to open a Favorite--provided you are using AutoComplete
for Web Addresses--by watching closely what shows up in the
AutoSuggest dropdown list as you type. If you see MSN.com
in that list without any protocol prefix chances are that it is in fact
an Internet shortcut. Opening that then would result in opening
whatever URL it is a shortcut to. And that URL is what might be
obsolete but being given an HTTP redirect to provide a grace
period to allow users to update their saved links.

I'd be very surprised if that could be used as a "home page".
It looks very much like a dynamic URI to me and is exactly
what I was thinking about when I mentioned the possibility
of change of format. Note that even if the format of the URI
remained constant there could still be the possibility that the name
of the associated Cookie might have changed and then it could be
the reason for a redirect to get a new dynamic URI.

What happens if you go to just http://my.msn.com/
and make that your home page?

Good luck

Same problem. Even if I use msn.com or my.msn.com. If I change the home page
to Google or something else, no problem. Only on the Microsoft site.

Did you try to get rid of any Cookies for msn.com?

I just traced what happens when I enter a full URL (instead of using
an msn.com Favorite) and saw a Cookie sent with this:

GET http://msn.com/ HTTP/1.1

This is the response received for that request:

HTTP/1.1 302 Object Moved
Location: http://www.msn.com/

The 302 response contains partial HTML which is not contained within
<html> and </html>. (Head and body elements only.) That may be
(somehow) what you are seeing.

So that all suggests a few more possibilities that you could check:
1. Make sure you are using the HTTP 1.1 protocol (Options,
Advanced tab)
2. See what happens if you start with the above redirect location.
3. If you have any interfering software (e.g. software firewall)
try letting these site names bypass whatever filters they might be
encountering.

While testing please use Default security settings in the Internet zone
and Default Privacy settings for all msn.com site names.

Good luck
