Object could not be found - Outlook 2003

When I click on the Unread mail subfolder of the Search folder, I get a
frustrating error:

The operation failed. An object could not be found.

Could this error message be any more vague? How does anyone begin to
troubleshoot such a nebulous error?

POP3/IMAP or Microsoft Exchange user?

For POP3/IMAP, I would run the inbox repair tool (scanpst.exe) against your
..pst file(s). Once that is done, can you select/delete the search folder
via the folder list?

If you are an Exchange user, are you in cached mode? If yes, might try
deleting the .ost file while Outlook is closed and letting Outlook make a
new one.

I archived all my mail, thus backing up and cleaning out all the mail
folders.

I deleted my Outlook profile and launched Outlook, creating a new profile
and setting up my email accounts again. The problem got fixed, although I
am not sure how. It was a little tedious but I was unaware of a "repair"
tool at the time I did this.
