To all the Members of ACF...Especially those members
from a couple of years ago.
Back before we first got our group in a magazine article, (thanks to
S.O.S.,I think).
The two Johns were just writing the FAQ(s)...
Pricelessware didn't have a name yet, or logo.
There were no flame wars on the group, but there were alot of people
that got help here, my self included.
Back before you'd get 100 spams a day from one posting in a newsgroup.
A lot of water under the bridge (and trolls too)...
Ole granpaw always was a nostalgic ole fart, so you all know who you
are....Have a Great One All! and a toast to those who made ACF what it
is today!

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year....

Belated Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too, granpa.

By the way, I once wrote a letter to Computer Shopper (October 2000)
which mentioned ACF and which was published. Maybe not the first time
ACF was mentioned in a publication, but definitely *a* time. Here's
the letter:
________________________

SORRY, UNCLE BILLY

Your feature "So Long, Shrink-Wrap" in the August issue (p.182) was
obviously biased toward software manufacturers. I understand how this
could happen, given that your publication's revenues are based on the
marketing of software and hardware.
Yes, wouldn't it be great if software manufacturers could rent
their software for bloated fees instead of simply selling licenses for
their usage? And wouldn't it be great if they could completely
eliminate production costs, further maximizing their profits?
Don't hold your breath. Internet security concerns (which are
increasing in direct proportion to Internet security violation scams)
will prevent most intelligent business owners from "letting it all
hang out" on the Internet via databases, PIMs, and other such
programs. Also, the average consumer won't want to depend on online
software that will be free at first, then available only for
increasingly costly rental fees.
You also neglected to mention the most obvious alternative to
bloated and pricey packaged software: freeware. The
*alt.comp.freeware* newsgroup has identified viable free alternatives
for every category of software, with the exception of TrueType font
editors. It's even discussed creating its own non-bloated, open-code
Web-surfing freeware. Of course, you won't print this letter, because
you wouldn't want to upset Uncle Billy.
