O/T Maybe ?

When I try to update Ad Aware definitions it only gets as far as the 5%
mark and then fails to update .. I have uninstalled and downloaded again
from the Lava soft Ad Aware page but it still keeps happening ... why is
this ?

You might try changing the place that you're downloading from.
I think it defaults to a European server.

I don't think the download location in the Free version of Ad-Aware can
be changed. Perhaps you are thinking about Spybot Search & Destroy.

I noticed the same thing when I installed the newest version. I opened
the update and allowed it some extra time to do it's thing. Now I have
no problems with it. Be patient it seems to be a weird glitch.
