I'm trying to help someone in another group who is having trouble with his
son who is obviously using some sort of password cracker to access the
system - what I'm going to suggest is that he sets his machine to ONLY boot
from a floppy disk - which of course he can put in his pocket. Anyone got
any links as to how that can be accomplished?

Thanks

I would check most bios setups will support a bios password, I think this
would be the best option as it would rule out access to anything so therefore
nothing to be cracked, just ensure case is secured to stop resetting
internally i.e. reset jumpers or battery removal

Either that or:

.....store it in a locked room
.....take the power cord with you
.....disconnect the cable/phone line at the house entry

Basically though, these are just attacking the symptoms. The only real cure
is to discipline the child, which is not all that easy either.

How can a program to decode (128Bit?) encription of a password be used if
there is no OS to run it until the password is entered? Wouldn't it take
years on anything but a super computer? If start up's password is so easily
crackable, what is the point of having it in the first place??

just for your reference if you can boot from a floppy it is very easy to
replace passwords in xp (I'm not going to say how here) therefore bios pword
is the best option

good luck

If the kid has a password reset program on the floppy disk, then he is
still going to fire it up. Try Plan B, discipline
