Well, I'm using XP Home Edition, and I'm experiencing some problems with my
nVidia GeForce 8400 GS video card. I reinstalled XP yesterday, and at first
XP told me there were no drivers installed, so I used Windows Update, it
found the drivers needed for the card, and started to install them. While it
was installing them my screen turned black and I had the little flashing
underscore in the upper left hand corner of my screen. My computer wouldn't
respond to anything, so I ended up having to shut it down using the power
button. I rebooted, and everything was exactly the same as before, I tried
going to nVidia's website, downloading drivers there, installing them, but I
got the same result. I would like to know if anyone of you has ever
experienced a problem like this, or knows how to fix it. Simple things like
scrolling through a web page have become horrid, so I hope this can be fixed.

Thanks in advance :).

Hard to say exactly what the problem is because we don't know how or why
you reinstalled Windows XP.

Open Device Manager and uninstall your video card. Upon reboot, Windows
XP will recognize the card and install its own driver. Then go to
nVidia's web site, obtain the latest software for your video card and
install it following nVidia's instructions exactly.

Never ever install drivers from Windows Update, always get them from the
hardware mfg's website. Your problem can be the result of a conflict
somewhere or possibly a bad graphics card. I had a customers machine doing
something similar, upon inspection of the card it had 2 bad capacitors on
it.

As David elaborate kindly, it is a Nvidia card, why you downloaded the
drivers from Windows updates at all, it is advisable to get it from the
Hardware manufacturer web site for your Hardware specs.
Best if you Restore to before the windows updates took place and then Go to
the Nvidia website and get the driver(s) from there.
****Caution****, make sure you have Anti-virus and Firewall installed to
browse the internet or you will be gotten and Forgotten?.

Not that I'm such a great friend of the monopolists from Redmond, but
there's nothing "bad" about drivers you get from Windows Update. They
are logo tested by WHQL. They're just not as up-to-date and perhaps not
as fully featured as the drivers you get from the manufacturer.

I've had more than one PC end up with rather serious problems after
customers updated drivers via Windows update. Examples include the computer
not resuming from suspend after a NIC driver update, not booting after a
video driver update. Of course it's not at all out of the question that some
may end up with similar issues when downloading from the mfg's website, you
never can tell what's gonna happen.

Hi Earl,
I disagree with you on this, Microsoft will not dedicate its time to Develop
a driver (s) for others just to be compatible with it's OSs, this why they
issue the Beta testing for, to give the Big vendors/software companies to
develop and test on the new system before launching or used by the masses.
There is a co-operation from these companies with MS in that aspect.

From a personal experience, most of the time it is NOT a good idea to get
the Drivers from Windows Updates, the least for better performance.
