nvidia go driver rollback

OK, this is party my fault but here goes

intalled the system pn my laptop at home with no internet connection. (oops)

my graphics card ( GeForce4 420 Go) was picked up as GENERIC VGA so I
couldnt even run a screensaver, never mind aero glass effects

i figured what-the-hell and instaed the XP drivers, and was quite surprised
they installed and gave me some 3d enhancements (games, screensavers etc). I
happily installed my software and payed about for a coupe of days.

got to work and pugged into the net where it picked up an updated graphics
card driver and started to install from windows update

then it said "cannot find file" and failed the update

my card then reverted to GENERIC VGA settings, and i couldnt re-install the
XP drivers OR apply the ms-update drivers

eventually I gave up and did a system roll back to before the update was
applied

I notice from my update history that it has tried 5 times now to install
this update (although curiously it has changed from RECOMMENDED to
OPTIONAL ) with an error code of 80070103 (or 80070002 when it was a
recommended update )

my questions are :

1) is there any way i can get the more supported drivers installed
2) has anyone else had their update priority changed? It seems a bit like a
plumber saying "YOU REALLY NEED THIS WIDGET FITTING OR YOUR HOUSE WILL
FLOOD!" then finding he cant fit it and saying "weeeeell...it's not THAT
important anyway".

Try installing the drivers from www.nvidia.com
I never install drivers from Windows Updates, as the manufacturers website
will always have the most recent version available, and you don't have to
worry about Windows Updates working/not working and/or failing to install
updates.

On my system the beta 32bit Vista driver from the Nvidia site crashes my
system. I went back to the XP driver and my system which had a performance
rating with the original Microsoft driver of 5.9 for the video card. The XP
driver dropped it to 1.9 and Aero effects were disabled. I rolled back to the
Microsoft driver and my score went back up to 5.9 and Aero effects were
enabled. I would say the beta drivers still need work.
