Hi,
I have many sections in a document. Each section contains tables that
should start with Table 1. How do I change the numbering for each section.
Right now it's picking up where it left off in the previous section.

As always thanks for your help.

Instead of "Continue previous list" in the bullets and numbering option,
select restart numbering

Mickey,

The table caption (I assume you are using captions) consist of a labe
"Table" and a sequence number created with a {SEQ} field. Select the
number, right click and press toggle field codes to see the field.

If you want to reset this sequence at the start of each new section then
change the code in the first SEQ field in section 2 and subsequent sections
to SEQ Table \r 1 \* ARABIC. The \r 1 resets the sequence to 1.

If you include the "chapter number" in the table caption, this will happen
automatically. And you should not restart the numbering in each section
unless you do include a higher-level number.

Hi Mickey,

See if this option works for your document. Assuming you're using Word
2003, in the Caption dialog box, select Numbering... Then, select the
"Include chapter number" check box. Make the appropriate selection for
"Chapter starts with style". This should work if each section of your
document begins with a Heading style.

Good luck!

Good point!

All depends on how your company prefers to list their tables!! We use
consecutive numbering throughout the entire document, however, in some
instances, the author would like to restart the numbering for each section -
in that case I would restart numbering, as we do not use captions for table
numbering, we use auto numbering.
