numbering equations

Is there a way in MS WOrd 2003 to number equations in
a document, as in:

F=ma (12.1)

E=mc2 (12.2)

and make them so they automatically renumber when one is inserted or
eliminated?

Thanks!

Assuming that the x part of your "x.y" numbering is from the outline
numbering of a Heading 1 paragraph, you can use the following field construct
for numbering:
({ STYLEREF 1 \s }.{ SEQ eqn \s 1 }).

Note that you must insert each pair of field delimiters, { }, by pressing
Ctrl+F9. Type the field codes as shown.

Create a two-column, one-row table (without borders), and then place the
fields (and static text) in the right-most cell. Then select the whole
construct and create an AutoText entry. Insert this AutoText whenever you
need this kind of numbering.

To show/hide field codes, press Alt+F9. To update all fields, switch to
Print Preview and back, or select the whole document (Ctrl+A) and then press
F9.

And the 12 is a chapter number? Yes.

Insert a caption (Insert | Reference | Caption, IIRC) including chapter
number to the appropriate heading style, for any category. The result
will insert the category name ("Figure") and two fields. Hit Alt-F9 to
toggle field codes.

Now, the first field is a STYLEREF field pointing to the heading. Leave
that unchanged. The second, SEQ field counts your figures. Change the
identifier to (say) "equation". This combo of two fields is all you need
to number your equations correctly.

The rest is setting up a 1x2 borderless table, placing the equation
object in the left and the fields in the right cell. I'd save the whole
thing, w/ or w/o the equation, as an AutoText.
