numbered squares top left corner of spreadsheet

Michel Maksoud

I received a spreadsheet that has three numbered squares
(1, 2 & 3) in the top left corner of a worksheet.
Pressing the squares seems to only hide and unhide rows.
There is no help available for them using SHIFT-F1. Right
click on that area produces nothing. There are no macros
in the workbook. There are no custom view. Can somebody
tell me what those squares are and how to get rid of them?

They could have been put there by Data|subtotals, too.

If that's what did it and you want to keep the subtotals, but lose the
outlining, you can hide them.

Tools|options|View tab|Outline symbols.

If they're from data|subtotals, it's a nice way to see those subtotal rows
(uncluttered by the details).
