Numbered Lists unilaterally converting to bulleted - Word 2007

Problem: When attempting to get a "level 5 body" numbered list to restart at
1, it converts to bulleted, then when converting to body level 5 numbered, it
restarts at some number other than 1, and when restarting at 1, changes back
to bulleted, ad nauseum.

Discussion: I am working on a fairly large tech document that uses five
levels of headings and body. And within the bodies are numbered and bulleted
lists. In Level 5, there is a numbered list that starts at 1, 2, 3, etc.
This is followed by a bulleted list. Then there is a numbered list. The
numbered list is starting at "5" so I want to reset it back to 1. But when I
command a "restart at 1" it converts it to bulleted. And I mean it actually
converts to the style named, "level 5 bulleted." What is strange about this,
is that level 5 numbered is based on level 5 normal, whereas level 5 bulleted
is based on Normal: they don't even have the same root paragraph style. And
as described above, converting the bulleted level 5 style back to numbered
results in the style going back to its aforementioned number "5."

This is the only list level I'm having trouble with in the document.
Anybody have an idea as to what is going on? And how to fix it?

Stefan - the problem document originated as a Word X.X version from perhaps
ten years ago. So the lists were based on what Word was doing back then. I
have since converted it to docx format. Perhaps this is where some of the
formatting dyspepsia is coming from. Since your reply, I have largely beaten
the original problem to death. It is solved to my satisfaction. However, I
have a new and improved problem and if you'll notice I have highjacked the
original subject line. Perhaps you have some insight into the following:

Some new text has been recently added in at "Level Six" in lists. The
original writer of this text used Word2007 and formatted it as a Level Six
header in outline. He ran the included lists continuously. I am having to
go through and where necessary, "restart at 1" to get the numbering
restarted. OK, whenever I do this, my commanded indent of 1.75" (with 0.25
in overhang) unilaterally changes to a 2.25 indent on the first element of
the newly restarted list. I can manually move the indents back to 1.75", but
I am afraid that should I make any auto changes I'm going to be looking at a
whole bunch of 2.25 indents again. Do you have any idea why Word forces
these formatting changes? I am assuming I'm commiting some code faux pas and
Word is trying to keep me from doing what I'm doing.

Restarting numbered lists can be tricky in Word. If you can use a higher
level to restart the numbering, that is usually an easier approach.
