numbered bullets

I have numbered bullets and the numbering is not
sequential. So I select it and choose Format/Bullets and
Numbering and then check continue with previous lists.
This updates the numbering properly, but then I save and
exit the document and when I open it again -- the
numbering is all messed up again. For some reason the
save isn't taking place. Any ideas? I'm working with
Word 2002 on XP.

Hi Donna,

Do you have the "Update style from template" option activated?
Tools > Templates and Add-ins... > Automatically update document styles
