Number of Files in the System

When I select all files on my C drive and check properties there are
about 55,000 files. When I run Norton Antivirus scan it shows about
953,000 files. What is the discrepancy? The Norton count seems to be
increasing dramatically.

Hi Dennis,

I don't have NAV on my system, but I can only guess it is counting
hidden files, deleted files, etc. Do you have Explorer set to show
hidden files? 953,000 seems inaccurate. Have you cleared your temp
folder, browser cache folder, Recycle Bin? If you've never cleared
those, you could have thousands of small files there, but still far from
953,000.

When I watch Norton it may show one file name while the file counter
increases by hundreds. I wonder if it is counting certain records in
some files. The is a huge number in windows/installers/.

I would open the included Backup program, select your drive and have a
full backup set up. It will go through and count the files for you and
I would trust that over what Norton is telling you.

Or you can try Sisoft Sandra Lite:
http://www.sisoftware.co.uk/?dir=dload&location=sware_dl_3264&langx=en&a=

There is a "Drives Information" icon and you can select your drive and
see all the stats, including the amount of files.

Norton is scanning 'inside' compressed files.

For instance a *.cab file while appearing as a single file to Explorer may
contain dozens, hundreds or thousands of individual files.

Self extracting compressed installation files for programs (i.e.. <some
program>.exe) also appear as a single file to Explorer yet contain all the
individual files for installing '<some program>.'

Compressed files such as Zip, RAR, ACE, ARC, ARJ, BIN Likewise. It adds up.
