Number of characters including text boxes

I have a number of documents of which I need to know the number of
characters in them. I know of the document property Number of
characters but the thing is, text in these documents has always been
entered in text boxes and these don't seem to be counted.
All suggestions are welcome.

Can you use frames instead of text boxes? Word will see text in them for
word count purposes.

I'm afraid not. The documents are coming from an external source and
have a fixed format.
