I pasted some data from one worksheet into another and the new worksheet gave me 65k rows and an unknown but large number of columns. This made the file exceedingly large. how do i prevent that from haqppening?

Every excel worksheet in the later versions has 65,536 rows of 256 columns.
Just ignore the empty ones.

Perhaps the old worksheet had the gridlines turned off, in
the new worksheet go to tools/options/view and uncheck
gridlines.
