Hi,

I have a problem on a laptop where everytime I reboot the machine or even
just log off, the num-lock turns on. The problem is that being a laptop some
of the alpha keys are then changed into number mode and the password is not
correct. Is there anyway of making sure that the numlock is off.

I have checked the BIOS settings and it is off there so that is one down, I
just can't seem to find it anywhere else. I guess it must be in the registry
somewhere....

Thanks for your help.

1. Run Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).
2. Navigate to HKEY_USERS\.Default\Control Panel\Keyboard.
3. Change the value for InitialKeyboardIndicators from 2 to 0.

I have run the following steps, but value is over ridden at shut down to
current state of num lock. I use a laptop with and without a docking
station (actually a port replicator, as I learned yestrday) so ideally if it
could ignore last state and use BIOS setting that ould be great.

1. Run Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).
2. Navigate to HKEY_USERS\.Default\Control Panel\Keyboard.
3. Change the value for InitialKeyboardIndicators from 2 to 0

Yes, Windows will remember the status of Num Lock, and enable it on the next
boot.

Check the setting in your BIOS.
And make sure that
HKEY CURRENT USER\Control Panel\Keyboard
InitialKeyboardIndicators is set zero

and BIOS is set to no NumLock on boot or whatever setting.
i.e. NumLock: [NO]

Thanks, but still no luck.
After dozens of restarts, this is what I am finding.
I have set BIOS to all three states, and watching the Num lock indicator as
it boots and it seems to start in the desired state, until XP starts up and
over rides that state.
I have tried setting HKEY CURRENT USER\Control Panel\Keyboard
InitialKeyboardIndicators to zero, two, and blank, but when I shut down it
reverts back to the state that the num lock is in.
Either I am not saving the registry correct (although I close regedit and
open and my changes are there) or XP is changing it as it closes.

I have a couple of ideas.

Visit here...
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Read the instructions at the top
Click on 4. Right hand side
Set Numlock State On or Off at Startup

This will download numlockenabledisable.vbs which is a vbs script that
allows you to enable or disable numlocks.

You can try just the script or copy it to >>>
Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
or
Run the Script Using Group Policy if you have XP Pro.

Make sure that all keys with an InitialKeyboardIndicators are set the way
you want.

S-1-5-18 is the SID for %systemroot%\system32\config\systemprofile.

S-1-5-21-1708537768-1580436667-1202660629-1003 is my SID. Yours will be
S-1-5-21-some other numbers.

The HKEY_CURRENT_USER InitialKeyboardIndicators value and
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-some other numbers will be the same, probably. They
should be the same with you logged on.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Keyboard

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Keyboard

HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18\Control Panel\Keyboard

HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1708537768-1580436667-1202660629-1003\Control
Panel\Keyboard

Also check this key...
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\IniFileMapping\win.ini\Windows
Value Name: InitialKeyboardIndicators
Value Type: REG_SZ
Value Data: USR:Control Panel\Keyboard
-----

Now this is interesting...

To change the value of this entry, press the NUMLOCK key on your keyboard.

Still no luck.

1) Kellys tweaks toggled the InitialKeyboardIndicators but those changes
are overwritten at logoff.

2) Using the Logon Script (262625) did toggle the numlock to the opposite
state from logoff. It's as if the numlock key is push right after logon.

3) In the registry, all ...\Control Panel\Keyboard are set to the same
value. And if you change one, they all change.

4) "To change the value of this entry, press the NUMLOCK key on your
keyboard." Yes, it works just like they told it to, not how I want it to.

Thank you for your suggestions, Jim

XP has changed the way numlock is initialized at startup. It now
remembers whatever state numlock is in upon logoff, and it restores that
state the next time you login. you could add a vb-script to your startup
folder to change the state to a specific state at each login, an exercise
left up to the reader ;-)

Oh hell, look here:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314879

or google for xp numlock vb script
