num lock makes "j" type "1"

This is a full USB keyboard linked to a desktop PC. If NUM LOCK is on,
I can use the number pad to enter digits. So far so good. However, if I
press letter "j" I get 1, if I press letter "k", I get 2, and so on...
Just like on a laptop. Therefore, I have to disable NUM LOCK at
startup. I can do that and live with it. However, I'd prefer to have a
full keyboard with normal functiunality, letters and numbers on the
side.
Can you please help?
Brand is media-tech MT1404

First stop is control panel, keyboard
Check that it names the correct keyboard under the hardware tab.

If wrong, update the driver from the cd that came with the keyboard, or
from the manufactures web site.(within properties for that keyboard)
If you cannot find the 'correct' driver try using a standard 101/102
Microsoft driver.
Be sure to make a system backup before doing much with the drivers (it
should make one itself but better safe ....) so that you can 'toll back' to
previous driver if things get worse.

Sounds like the keyboard "may" be configured as a small "laptop"
keyboard instead of the 104 key style.

Thanks for your reply. I have the driver from the manufacturer and
tried to download one from their site too in case of an upgrade but no
luck. The standard MS driver doesn't help. Second step?

next try:
go to device manager, check the device manager entry,
delete it (you did say you have the one from the manufacturer), reboot, it
should find and insert a keyboard driver, probably the same one.
if that doesn't help then using the main keyboard for numeric input may be
'feature' of this keyboard.

You can also try other more generic drivers for keyboards, I suggest trying
(in device manager, keyboards, right click and 'update driver')
a standard USB microsoft keyboard, pick a simple one.
Don't let it go to the web for new driver, install from a list, don't search,
install from a list,
if compatible hardware is shown try one of those, otherwise uncheck the
compatible hardware box, it the list pick Microsoft and then go down to a
USB keyboard. If that works as expected (fancy keys on you actual keyboard
will probably NOT work) then problem is in your keyboard driver, not
something else such as a software package 'helping'.
If the Microsoft driver works and the keyboard driver on your CD doesn't
then your only hope is that the on-line one has been updated.
