Just upgraded (well did a fresh install) from 98 to XP
and my old DOS-based programs use 99% CPU and the system
slows to a crawl when they are open. Also, even if I
just run command.com and hold a key down (like L or enter
or something) CPU usage is about 80%.
The issue did not occur on 98 and the programs are not
that resource intensive, i.e. they will run on a 486 and
my current computer's clock is 2.2GHz. Task manager
shows ntvdm.exe using 99% CPU but only 4 MB of RAM.
I tried setting priority to low from task manager, this
helps somewhat but not as much as you would think (the
CPU usage is still 99% but the slowness is helped a
little). I also have heard of tamedos.com but would like
to try other things first.
