I am having an error with my windows xp professional.
every time i try to run command.com I get an error hat
ntvdm.exe has had an ''error''. if i could get
instructions on how to reinstall or fix this problem or a
download for it that would be great. My problem is I
cannot run any 16-bi aplications. ''thats what I think is
going on.''

I have already reinstalled windows xp pro, and I have
reinstalled all my drivers/updates. What could cuase this
error?

Try running the system file checker
sfc /scannow
Also ntvdm.exe is the name of a type of spyware (kills firewalls) be sure you do not have this.

Kevin, run these programs to check for spyware/malware. After
installing update them, then boot into safe mode and run them. You
should run update and run them weekly.

Spybot Search and Destroy

Bazooka Adware and Spyware Scanner

After your system is clean use these programs to help keep it clean:

Spywareguard

Hi Kevin,

Close all running programs. Locate ntvdm.exe in the \Windows\System32 folder
and delete it (it's probably corrupt). Reboot the system. See if the problem
goes away, as the file will be replaced by one from the system cache (System
File Protection at work).

Deleting system files is scary. boo! Wouldn't renaming be better?

This one's easy, and is covered by SFP. Renaming has the same effect, but
just leaves the non-functional file on your system. Deleting puts it in the
RB, and it'll get dumped the next time you take out the trash. At worst, you
extract a new copy from the \I386 folder.

I suppose I'm just a tad too old-fashioned. :)

So often though you find you cannot delete because the file in question
is in use. Renaming gets a replacement through SFP, and at a reboot
that one gets loaded.
