When starting Windows the following comes up

C:\windows\system32\usetinit.exe
the ntvdm cpu has encoutered an illegal instruction
CS:0502 IP:2b02 OP 63 02 00 00 00
choose close to terminate application

After clicking on the close button nothing appears on the desktop but the
wall paper. this also happens in safe mode even when selecting
administrator.

Last known configuation does not help.
Can anyone help? Or will the hard drive have to be reformated and all
installed? Sure hate to do that.

Hi Ken,

Is it usetinit.exe or userinit.exe?

You might try this: Close all running programs. Locate ntvdm.exe in the
\Windows\System32 folder and delete it (it's probably corrupt). Reboot the
system. See if the problem goes away, as the file will be replaced by one
from the system cache (System File Protection at work).
