there is a file titled ntuser i think .dat in mydocuments
that i cannot delete. the error message says unable to
delete as file is being used by another user or program.
I get this message when no other program is running. what
is this and how do i get rid of it. Thanks!

well, you could login as administrator and delete it from that account. but
why would you want to? do you know what that file is for? do you know what
will happen if you are successful in deleting it?? and if you are asking
about deleting this one, what else have you already deleted that will screw
up your system?

I don't know what it is, it just appeared there, that is
why I'm concerned. WIth all the talk about viruses, spy
ware etc, i don't like having something I don't know about
on my system. I clicked the properties button, however
that didn't tell me much. Thanks for the reply!

if you went through windows and deleted all the stuff you didn't know about
your computer wouldn't last very long. ntuser.dat is where windows stores
your user settings. it is normally a hidden system file so you shouldn't
see it. if you want to find and clean up spyware and other junk it is best
to use the freely available tools to do it, at least the writers of them
have some idea of what is needed and what isn't.

This is why Micosoft defaults to hiding system files. You should go into Explorer - tools - view and click "do not show hidden files". Please do not delete this file it is important.

That is your personal section of the registry - leave it strictly alone.
Also the bak and log related files
