Use FAST to export the entire profile?

Or use the steps to create a default user profile to copy the profile and
give it the proper permissions necessary?

novice: I do not know what file ntuser.dat is... I am trying to make a copy of my 'documents and setting' folder on an external harddrive for backup purposes. The system will not let me because it says netuser is in use. How do I make a copy???

Either of the methods above will work fine. Remember - if you are logged in
as the user you are trying to make a copy of (or sometimes, *have logged in*
as the user you are trying to make a copy of since the last time the
computer was rebooted) - well, the files for that user will show to be "in
use" and you cannot copy files while they are in use. Reboot and log in as
another user.

Now - I commend you for wanting to backup your files - but the real
important stuff is not in the NTUSER.DAT file for most - the real important
stuff is usually just in "My Documents" of the profile, possibly the
"DesktoP" and maybe a few subdirectories of the "Application Data" and
"Local Settings" folders. In other words, be selective about your backup.
The NTUSER.DAT contains some personal preferences (for applications and for
the desktop layout) - but it doesn't contain the files you have created and
saved, your emails or your contacts.
