I have Windows 2000 server SP4 that has a lot of
$NTUninstall folders in the C drive. Will there be a
problem if I delete the folders? If I am not wrong these
are folders from whenever a Service pack or hotfix is
applied right?Any help or pointers in the right direction
would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Lakshman

These folders allow you to uninstall a hotfix that may appear in Add\Remove. That is NOT to say the hotfixes can successfully be removed just that these folders exist so that ostensibly you can. I really don't think they take up much room. But I suppose you could delete them and remove the entries in Add\Remove that correspond to those you remove. I just don't see any benefit to that other then for cosmetic reasons. The loss\gain in space ought really be minimal.

i also have these files on my computer, and they total
over 60MB, how about if i zip them into a file and save
them externally?

Yes I guess 60MB isn't something to sniff at. But honestly if 60 MB starts to make or break free space on the Windows 2000 think seriously about getting a bigger harddrive. They aren't too much.

Anyway yes I suppose you could do that. Just leave the entries in Add\Remove. They may lose their icon there though. Then when\if you wanted to remove one you could just put it back in the same location. Just make sure the unzip keeps the same folder construction. I suppose you could also remove the entries in Add\Remove by finding the corresponding key for the entry under:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

and saving the key as a reg file. And when\if you want to uninstall a particular hotfix double-click this regfile first.

I delete them only because a) it takes that much longer to backup the hard
disk b) it takes that much longer to defrag the hard disk and, c) it takes
that much longer when I'm searching for something on the hard disk.
