$NtServicePackUninstall$ $PatchCache$ dllcache

Dmitry Kopnichev

Hello
Should I delete C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$ and
C:\WINDOWS\Installer\$PatchCache$ folders to gain space on the HDD? The
Windows is XP Pro SP2.
My C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache is 570 mb in size. May I clean it up?

I would not modify the \Installer\ components. In the case of the Service
Pack Uninstaller - burn it to a CD-R. DllCache is a source point for the
Windows File Protection facility. You can move/redirect it to a different
drive, to gain space on the XP partition. Alternately, SFC /Purgecache
will remove it's contents - but XP will almost immediately attempt to do
a repopulation of it. (Which you can cancel).

An alternative if these folders are on an NTFS formatted disk or
partition is to compress them. It may not win so much free disk space
but then you avoid the risk of losing the CD.

Hope this helps.
