I bought my notebook when I worked in Singapore. I bow work
in Taiwan. The CD Combo drive failed last year and I can
not repair it in Taiwan.

Now today my notebook would not start. I get the message:
NTLDR is missing
press any key to restart

this appears repeatedly

I do not have a CD drive installed because my notebook does
not work when it is installed ...no fixed optical drive. It
crashes when I start with the cd drive in.

I am using Windows XP proffessional.

Is there anything I can do to save my computer and work???

I called my notebook support in Taiwan they said it was an
OS problem and that I could reboot from a floppy drive.

Can this be done and can I have instructions

I think it would probably be easiest if you could source
out a new cd-rom device for your notebook. NTLDR is the
part of windows that loads up the rest of the system. To
fix the problem you would either have to re-install your
windows os or replace the boot loader.

To do this in windows 95/98 you would use the command
'a:\sys c:' from a boot disk. However, I do not know how
this would be done for an nt based system.

In order to save your work, I would try removing your
notebooks hard-drive and installing it as a secondary drive
in your main pc. You coud then transfer the work files
across to your main drive.

Warning: Earth youself via your computer casing and switch

of the power at the wall before attempting this
fix.

Remember that on an IDE chain (the hdd/motherboard link)
the primary device shoud be set as 'master' and the
secondary as 'slave'. These are set as jumpers on the
drives themselves. There should be a sticker on each drive
that tells you the jumper settings fro master, slave or
cable select. Avoid cable select like the plague as it
only ever causes problems.

If this information is missing, these settings will be
indented above the jumper in an 'm s cs' manner.

Hopefully, it's this simple:

Verify that you didn't leave a disc in the floppy drive. If so, remove it and
the system should boot up properly.

Why is it that everytime I suggest that I get attacked? lol
It seems some people don't like to look for the "simple" solution.

you can use command console and copy the ntldr from the i386 directory to
the root of c:\ if you dont have the cd rom, you could copy it from a
friends xp along with boot.ini and ntdetect. then boot with this floppy in
place and copy the file over to the root of c:\
