NTLDR missing

Hope someone can help.
have an xp pro machine and on boot up "NTLDR missing"
error.
Have copied NTLDR and NTDETECT.com from CD to root of
C:using recovery mode...had do do attrib NTLDR -s -h -r to
be able to over write the files as I kept getting accessed
denied when I initially tried to do this.
If I piggy back the drive to an existing xp pro machine it
sees the drive but in disk management it thinks its not
formatted, also if I try to browse it it asks if I want to
format it.
If I boot from a 98 boot dist I can get to C: I can see
all folders and files but cannot read the files or copy
them, I get an error saying cannot read them but I can see
everything, if I edit (dos edit) a doc file in one of the
folders I can see the doc exists and can read bits and
pieces and can see lots of code which I assume must be the
coding in word.
I assume I can't read the files because the disk would
have been NTFS formatted and I am using a 98 fat32 boot
disk.

Hope this makes sense any help much appretiated.
Could a virus have caused this?
