NTLDR is missing

Hi,

I know this question is not new but just can't find the same case as mine.

I had a Compaq Win98 system installed a customize program, but the customize
program install CD is missing now. So I can't clean install WinXP but have to
upgrade it. After upgrading WinXP is running fine and the program also no
problem running.

And now the problem is I would like to clone the disk to a new computer, or
plug in the disk to new computer to run it as primary, the error "NTLDR is
missing" occured.

I had try the method:
1) Copy NTLDR & ntdetect.com
2) Running fixmbr & fixboot at Recovery console

But the problem still occured, any help would be great!

Thanks in advance,
Clement

So you are saying that you took the hard drive out of the old Compaq and put
it in a different computer? If this is the case, you will need to do a
Repair Install anyway.

If this isn't what you are saying, then please clarify.

Having a computer with a customised program for which you
have lost the installation disk is a setup asking for trouble.
Sooner or later, probably at the worst possible moment, you
will have to re-install this customised program.

About your current problem: You said you "cloned" your
hard disk but you say nothing at all about HOW you cloned
it. It is essential to exactly describe how you did this.

Thanks Malke and Pegasus for the fast reply.

As Malke said, I'm taking out the harddisk from old compaq system and put it
in the new computer as primary harddisk. I have done as Malke said, do a
Repair Install, just to save my data and program, but the result still the
same, NTLDR is missing.

Does this disk still work in the old PC?
By the way: A repair installation might fix a Windows
problem but it does not address an "ntldr missing"
issue. You get this message well before Windows has
started.

Yupe. The disk is working fine running WindowsXP in the old PC.
I have done the Repair Installation, but when start up PC, it just show
"NTLDR is missing" before windoes loading.

This is what I have done so far:
1) Can't go to Safe Mode.
2) BIOS detected the disk.
3) IDE cable changed.
4) In Recovery Console, delete the boot.ini and run Bootcfg /Rebuild
5) Run Fixboot, Fixmbr
6) Copy NTLDR & nedetect.com

Fine. It's time to check if your new installation is intact. Do this:
- Format a floppy disk on some WinXP/2000 PC.
Don't do it on a Win9x PC - it won't work.
- Copy these files from the \i386 folder of your WinXP CD to A:\
ntldr
ntdetect.com
- Create a file a:\boot.ini with these lines
[Boot Loader]
Timeout=3
Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect
- Boot the machine with this floppy
- Report the results here.

Hi Pegasus,

I had follow your instruction to create the boot disk, Windows XP is loading
and continue with the Repair Installing! May I know what exactly the problem
is?

Best Regards

I assume you're telling us that your machine now boots
with the floppy disk as expected and that your question
is how to get it to boot off the hard disk. Here is what
I would do:
1. Run diskmgmt.msc and confirm that drive C: is located
in a "Primary Partition" that is set to "Active" (two things to
check!).
2. Check that the following hidden files exist:
c:\ntldr
c:\ntdetect.com
c:\boot.ini
3. Check this page if still unsuccessful:

I just recovered from this happening to me. I called HP and they wanted
to charge 45.00 to help me when the information is on their site
(http://hp.com/support) for free. When I wouldn't pay the money the Rep
told me about the site.

Anyway, I had to do a system recovery and it was hell getting my
Anti-Virus software up and running. You have to have SP2 update already
installed.

Now for some reason most of my drive space is gone. I've defragmented
to the drive, cleaned the disk, emptied the cache and uninstalled
unwanted programs. So now what do i do to regain my disk space back?
This is weird. I only have the same files as I had before but after
this mishap my space is almost gone. Please advise, it would be
appreciated.
