NTLDR is compresssed, Laptop hangs when using windows cd to boot up

When I try to boot my XP home laptop I get the error "NTLDR is
compresssed". I tried to boot from my windows CD and Barts PE cd, but
it hangs after displaying " ....is checking your hardware
configuration".

I cannot boot in safe mode either... Any solutions..TIA...
