"NTLDR fatal error 256 reading BOOT.INI"

When I turned my desktop (Gateway running XP Home) on yesterday I got the
following msg: NTLDR fatal error 256 reading BOOT.INI

I can't seem to get past it and I can't find that error msg when I search
this site. Any help will be appreciated.

I would post the contents of the hidden file c:\boot.ini.

Boot up with your XP cd and from the recovery console enter the command
fixboot


If that does not work run chkdsk /r (from the recovery console)

Boot up with your XP cd and from the recovery console enter the command
fixboot

Good idea, and even better if you run this specific command:
bootcfg /rebuild
