trying to fix old compaq. mbr corrupted. installed new dos mbr.
fdisked - partioned. put xp cd in - received ntldr error.

Hi

Try this:

Boot with your XP CD in the cd drive. Select 'To repair..' by pressing 'R'.
When in the Recovery Console type the following:

"copy X:\i386\ntldr C:\" - without the quotes.

Where X is the letter of your CD drive and C is the letter of your system
drive. Take the XP CD out of the cd drive and reboot into XP normally.

It means the boot block that initiates the Windows OS is damaged.

A quick, TEMPORY, fix is to format a floppy on a good XP machine, and
copy "Boot.ini", "Ntdetect.com", "Ntldr" to it. Boot your system with the
floppy in the drive.. For a permanent fix........

Repair the Boot Sector using the Recovery console on the CD.

To repair a damaged Boot Sector, run the Recovery console from the CD. At
the command prompt type FIXBOOT and press Enter. Then answer "Y"
