ntfs security

(running XP pro sp3, 32 bit windows)
I am trying to get underneath the sharing and ntfs security ramifications.
Please correct my below summations where they are incorrect.
1. When you first create a user account you are given two choices of the
account type, Administrator or Limited.
2. Then if I run %windir%\system32\control.exe userpasswords2
then click Properties, then click Group Membership, and then
I get a chance to further define which type user the previously created
user acct will become. A Standard user, a Restricted user , by clicking
Other I get a whole list of group types.
So then I have created 'finally' the finished type of User Acct desired.
3. So now it all seems to come down to the folder and file settings.
If I right click on any folder or file I then can set the sharing of that folder
only. The sharing seems rather simple, you click on permissions and
you have 3 choices, pretty self explanatory.
(a) So then I click Security and the plot thickens a bit.
(i) I can Add groups or users to this folder or file, that is easy enough.
(ii) I click Advanced and this is where I'm not quite sure what is going on.
First off here I can Add groups or Users also, seems a bit repetitive
to have this in two places.
So anyhow here I can also Edit the permissions, but this is very confusing
since the inherited permissions are grayed out and if I choose a new one
it appears to eliminate the grayed out inherits, so I click cancel and
get out.
(iii) I also at bottom can check of uncheck two boxes that have to do with
inherits or replace permissions on child objects.
I think I understand all of the above except (ii) and (iii) ? Does one have to buy a
book on this or can someone briefly elaborate on it for me ?
