NTFS Security question

Jason

I have a peer to peer workgroup of about 15 computers. 4
of them have xp professional installed and one with
windows 2000(NTFS). The rest run windows 98.
My question is, i know i can set permissions on specific
files and folders on those ntfs machines but being a peer
to peer, can i block those users running windows 98 from
accessing files on those 5 machines with xp/2000? In other
words, will xp secuirty let me specify the NAMES of those
win98 clients or does this only work in a active directory
environment? How do i set the permissions in a workgroup
so that my xp machines can deny access to folders on these
machines to those machines running 98.

I hope im clear....thanks!!!

Hi,

you don't need to explicitly deny. If you don't give a user e.g. read
permission or any other permission he will automatically be denied...

If you want to grant someone from windows 98 access to your files on NTFS
protected files, you will have to create a user account in this server (or
2000, xp workstation), then set the permission. Only then will users have
the access to the files.

Don't forget to remove Everyone permissions from the folder that contain
your files...

I hope this helps,

Mike
