Hi,

I have a machine which has previously had XP pro installed on it with
FAT32 file system.
I plan to reinstall my OS soon and want to convert to NTFS at the same
time.
Will formatting using the 'quick' format rather than 'normal' format
negatively affect disk performance later when running the newly
re-installed OS?

Thanks.

Eric

No, it wont. Normal will take longer... and you do not have to format
to switch to NTFS!

Goto Start >> Run >> CONVERT C: /FS:NTFS

If you are going to reinstall windows anyway... do the longer format.
The best thing about it is it's checking for bad sectors... Please
refer here for more information -------

That will give you an understanding. if your not wanting to reinstall
the OS then you can, indeed, change it as previously suggested- though
I have not used that.

have fun! :)

No, using convert is *not* a good way for him to do it, since he's planning
on reinstalling anyway. Unless you take special precautions. simply using
the convert command will likely leave him with 512-byte clusters, instead of
the default 4K ones. Read here: http://www.aumha.org/a/ntfscvt.htm

He should reformat and recreate the partition as part of his reinstallation.

Do the full format and format it NTFS right from the start, don't bother
with FAT32 and convert.
