PC World Jan 2007 on p. 123 recommends switching to NFTS. Is this a good
idea and are there any risks? How do I determine if my machine is FAT or
NFTS.

NTFS is more secure and performs better under most situations than FAT.
Some reading to support this can be found at the following:

NTFS vs FAT
http://www.ntfs.com/ntfs_vs_fat.htm

Choosing between NTFS, FAT, and FAT32
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/...sing_between_ntfs_fat_and_fat32.mspx?mfr=true

To determine which file system is in use on your drive open Windows
Explorer, right click on the drive in question and select Properties. On
the general tab of the drive properties you will see the file system
information.
