ntfs hd and fat32 external

Hi All

I am running win 2000 on a dell dimension 8100 - 40 gig NTFS HD and I
purchases a iomage 80 gig external drive. Had a few issue with getting the
external to read data, but now it seem ok except:

1) I have just notices that is shows as a 80gig FAT32 - does this matter
that I have one hd as ntfs and the other fat32?

2) occasionally when I reboot the external drive is found and errors are
reported and a scan disk takes place. lots of unrecoverable data is found

are the two related

thanks for any help

as ever

Windows 2000 can use either NTFS or FAT32 without problems. Further, they
can be mixed and matched on one system. That said, you have another problem
which needs fixing. You should not be getting data errors on your external
drive.

I would suspect that the Iomega driver is not properly unloading during
shutdown. First try re-installing it. Next get to Iomega's website and
check for an updated driver. If available, install it.

If none of the above helps, check Iomega's support for any necessary Win
2000 tweaks. Could be the driver is not being notified properly of the
pending shut down or not being given enough time to clean-up.

does Iomega have a disk checking utility ? I woulkd run this
as the HD may actually be failing.

You can also run and error check on the HD to see if there
are any bad sectors on the drive.

Are you unmounting or disconnecting the external drive
before you turn off your computer, this ensures that all the
save processes are complete before shutdown.

good luck

Hi Geoff

I don't shut down or dismount the external HD - I just use the windows shut
down restart / shutdown options.

I did have a problem when I first installed the hd, I had to use iomega
online virtual help and map the drive (although it did show as a mapped
drive)

How do i go about disconnecting / unmounting the external HD?

Thanks

that should be OK, is it usb or firewire or ?

I would perhaps start then by uninstaklling and then re
installing any software. If it is usb remove the controllers
from the hardware in the control panel and allow windows to
find it again and install again.

I had a problem with an external usb drive that would not
allow pc to boot if it was connected - did above and all was
well (just left it attached)

I personally would format the drive to the same format as
the boot drive and not run the mix.

Did you try a re install at all
did you do error check

how is the drive described in "my computer" right click
manage
