ntfs file permissions - help please.

I currently have a shared drive which has two folders on it. eg Folder A and
Folder B and there are two Global groups Group X and Group Y.

Both Groups can access the drive Group X can access both folders and write
to both of them whereas Group Y can only Read the contents of one folder and
cannot access the other folder at all. Basically it is a repository for
information which a group X want to make available to group Y to read.

I now need to create a third folder C which a new Global group have read
write access to but are unable to create any files on the drive it self the
members of this Group are likely to be members of the read only Group Y

So far I have created the folder and prevented it from inheriting any
permissions and granted group Z all but full and modify permissions to this
folder. On the drive I gave them the same permissions as Group Y.

However when a member group Z enters drive their permissions on folder A
and folder B are unchanged as desired. although when they enter folder C
they can open the files therein but cannot save any changes they make.

Any help would be appreciated.

Check the permissions on folder C to see if they are what you expect, apparently
read/list/execute for your group. Make sure that those users are not a member of any
group the has deny permissions applied to that folder. Check advanced permissions
also. Also check the share permissions for that group, as they will need change
permission to do what you want. The resultant permission for a user or group will be
the most restrictive of either share or ntfs. -- Steve

I think it is the share permission, unfortunately my admin account does not
give me permission to use server manager. So I will have to make a few
enquiries tomorrow to confirm this.
