User as PowerPoint 2002 SP-3. When he attempts to open a particular file,
he gets and error message that refers to the file NTDLL.DLL. I get the same
message. My system is Windows 2000 SP-4 using PP 2002 SP-3. Can anything
be done?

What is the exact text of the error message?

Also, I believe you're saying this only happens with one specific file, not
with all PPT files or when you open PPT to a new blank presentation file. Is
this correct?

One specific file cannot be opened is correct.

We get the "Error Signature" that comes up giving
AppName: powerpnt.exe
AppVer: 10.0.6501
ModName: ntdll.dll
ModVer: 5.0.2195.7006
Offset: 0004affa

Then it says to view technical information about the error report, click
here...

There is nothing discernable there. In fact, as I look at this now, perhaps
the error is not NTDLL.DLL at all, but a part of these labels. In that
case, I have no idea why this presentation errors out excepting the
possibility of a corrupted file. In that case, I don't know anything we can
do about it.

Would you have any ideas? I've approached management numerous times
regarding software to clean up PPT files but have been unsuccessful in
obtaining a purchase. Is there anything else we can do?

I believe the ntdll.dll is a Windows system file. I'm not sure what in the
file might be triggering it, though.

For recovering corrupt files see Recovering a corrupt presentation
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00108.htm It does list the Office
Recovery tools, but I'll be honest -- I've never had any luck with those and
PPT files, so I wouldn't waste my money. (I do admit I've not tried the
newest version, though.) I would recommend trying Open Office's presentation
program to open "corrupt" PPT files -- as well as the other things listed in
the FAQ.

OK, let's try this:

Start a new blank presentation.
Choose Insert, Slides, From Files
Browse to choose your problem presentation and insert slides one at a time.
If one of them crashes PPT, quit, restart and repeat the whole process, this
time SKIPPING that slide. See if you can work your way around the problem that
way.

Can you do a search for "NTDLL.DLL" on your machine and then right click it
and select properties. When done post the version number of the dll.

As an aside, any chance you are running the "Small Business" package on
these machines?

Brenda,

Are you certain about that version number? The reason I ask is that
according to the Microsoft data base there is no such version number.

http://support.microsoft.com/dllhelp/?dlltype=file&l=55&alpha=NTDLL.DLL&S=1&x=12&y=7

It may well be possible you installed a software package (Ms or third party)
that replaced it with their own version and now it's causing problems
because you are using it in a way that you have not done before.

According to the data base, you should have version 5.0.2195.6685 for a
Windows 2000 machine with SP4 installed.

Yep, that's what it said. At any rate, the user had the file sent to him
again and the new version seems to work OK. This was, I think, a corrupted
file. I was able to insert the slides through #9 but as soon as #10 even
scrolled on to the screen, it crashed.

NOW the user tells me that the person sending him the file uses an Apple
computer. I don't know if perhaps we may have had some incompatibilities
between the two. Thanks for the help EVERYONE!
