NTbackup for XP Home

R

rctyrer

I installed the Ntbackup utility from the cd rom, and
have tried to use the backup utility. I have never used
this utility before, and need some help. I have set it up
to backup my computer twice. I set the parameters,
follow the program instructions, and tell it to
backup "now" and it appears to start. The problem is
that I let it sit for 2 hours on the first try. After
just a few minutes, I could hear bong bong bong
coming from my speaker. If I moved the mouse over the
screen popup of the backup program, it would vary the
timeing of the bonging, or creat static. Also the
program didn't appear to be doing anything. There were
no progress bar actions of any kind. The only message
that came up immediately and stayed there was something
like "preparing system for shadow file backup.........."
I only have like 4 gb of info on a 40gb drive to backup.
Am I being impatient or am I missing something? I tried
again the second time, and got the bonging again and no
progress bars, just the same message. It definetely had
the system tied up and when I looked in the task manager,
it showed the program as running.

I think I just figured part of it out. NO.1 The MS
shadow copy service was not started. Evidently you have
to start this manually?????? If I uncheck the use shadow
service, I can backup no problem. If I check the shadow
copy and start the service, backup runs, however, I got
an error message at the end that some files had not been
backed up. I checked the report, and the backup utiltity
had immediatelly disabled the shadow copy, and reverted
to a regular backup routine, which does not back up files
in use by the system or the user. This would prohibit
using a complete systme backup, as a system restore to
another disk. What do I have to do to enable shadow copy
and make it work. As I see it, no matter how or when you
run the backup utility, you are going to have system
files in use?????

Hi,

(Not sure if this was already replied)

Note that NTBackup will automatically create/delete shadow copies
during backup. There is no need to manually start the shadow copy
service.

The Volume shadow copy services (VSS and SWPRV) are enabled by default
after installing the operating system.

Your problem might be related with an error during shadow copy
creation. To investigate this further, please look in the backup log
and event viewer for VSS/shadow copy errors, and cut & paste any
errors in your reply.

Thanks, Adi
