ntbackup - cannot backup - error

I downloaded the NTbackup file (don't have my WinXp discs) and when i try to
make a backup of everything on my system, i get an error and nothing gets
done. I've tried backing up to my external harddrive, and i've tried just
backing up to the floppy, and the error still happens. any ideas?
 
FOLLOW UP:

i'm only allowed to backup 'my documents'. From the manually choose what to
backup menu, My Computer and other boxes are unable to be checked. Only my
briefcase and my documents can be clicked to be backed up. what gives?
