We have a small computer lab at school and are looking into up grading our system. We have 18 computers with XP HOME on them and our server has NT 4. Could we upgrade the server to XP PRO.?

XP Pro only allows 10 concurrent connections. You'd need to go to a Server
version.

One cannot upgrade a server version of NT 4 to Windows XP Pro.
You'll need to upgrade it to Windows Server 2003.

Go for Linux as a server. It can be run from a P1 300mhz
and not have to restart for a week at a time.

Your linux server has to be rebooted every week? I've had a win2k server up
for over 150 days without rebooting or shutting down.

Any Unix/Linux do not have to be reboot. I have had servers run 300 days
straight witj-out rebooting (I had to shutdown a few times because of power
grid issues).

Windows servers need to be shutdown regularly in order to update Microsft
software (Auto-updates and WindowsUpdates) and also re-fresh meemory because
of memory leaks.

That's what I thought. I thought linux was more stable than that. Thanks for
the info.

No. XP Pro is not a Server OS; if you try you will quickly discover
that it only allows 10 concurrent connections at once (that's not 10
"computers" but 10 "connections" - and there is a BIG difference).

To move up, you'd need to install at least Win 2000 Server, if not Win
2003 Server - and at a significant cost. Even at upgrade prices,
Server OS software doesn't come cheap.

XP Pro will only support 10 simultaneous connections in a net. You need
a server level system there - Win 2000 server or Win 2003 server (the
one more closely related to XP, but win 2000 if you can get it should be
quite adequate and cheaper)
