NT to XP upgrade problem

Dan

I am trying to upgrade my NT 4.0 system to XP. I keep
getting the error during installation that files cannot be
found on my computer in the C:\WINNT\$WINNT_ folder
(example: DISK101).

Then, when I exit the installation, I get a bad image
checksum in ntvdm.exe error upon NT boot!

I then must fix the file using the Emergency Repair Disk.

ANy ideas?

Thanks!

If you are trying to upgrade to Windows XP Home, then there is NO
upgrade path from NT4 - you have to do a clean install.

I have cogitated just a bit more...

I am trying to upgrade to XP Pro...I ran the upgrade
advisor, and it indicated all is well.

Any extra ideas?

Hi Dan,

I have never seen, nor can I find anything regarding the files not found in
the C:\WINNT\$WINNT_ folder, so I guess I'm just thinking out loud
here...........do you have SP5 or greater installed? I would imagine that
the Upgrade Advisor would have picked up on the lack of the appropriate SP
being installed, but one never knows.

Patti:

Thanks for your help...

I installed SP6a, which is the latest I had.

Just some background:

I did a complete fresh NT install (new partitions), and
didn't load ANY EXTRA SOFTWARE, including antivirus
software.

I tried to upgrade from within NT, since using the XP
install from CD-ROM made my system completely unusable (I
got some sort of stuck key blue screen error-I don't
remember the exact code).

Thanks again!

At shot in the dark here without the error code but I'd suggest that you
might have a hardware problem. Possibly RAM related. XP can be a real PITA
when it encounters flaky RAM. I've had systems that would run perfectly and
an upgrade to XP seemed to hang with any number of errors occurring. I've
often traced this back to RAM.

If you did a clean install of NT 4.0, then why not try a clean install of XP
Pro, just during setup, you'll be asked to insert qualifying media, just
insert the NT CD and go.

First, according to Microsoft, to perfomr an upgade from NT to XP, you must
be going to XP Professional. See
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/upgrading/matrix.asp

Assuming that is the case, consider whether your hardware and software are
compatible with XP. Run the free Microsoft Upgrade Advisor. See step 3 at
this link:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/upgrading/default.asp

Also see step 1 at the same link.

If everything look good, then think about a "clean" install. That is, let
XP erase your hard drive and install what it needs with no excess baggage.
To do this with the upgrade verison of XP, you will need a CDROM for a
"qualifying" operating system, since it will ask you to place that CDROM in
the drive for a few seconds. Qualifying OSs include 98, 98SE, ME, 2000, and
NT (only if upgrading to XP Pro).

Thanks to you all for your help.

I thought I tried booting from the XP CD-ROM and got some
sort of stuck key error that resulted in another blue
screen.

I'll try it again. If all else fails, I have a copy of
Windows98 that will work fine, since my computer is older.

It is a PII-300 MHz/96 MB Ram.

-Dan
