NT client cannot connect to multihomed W2K server

Hello all,

I have a W2K server that has two IP addresses bound to a
single NIC. A static mapping has been created in WINS to
indicate the second IP as part of a multihomed server.
W2K and WXP clients can connect to shares from the second
IP address, but NT and 9X systems cannot (An error 53
occurs).

What options do I have other than upgrading the clients to
W2K or higher?

Thanks in advance,

Robert DiMarzio

Is File and Printersharing loaded and is netbios over TCP/IP enabled?
Do you have options 044 and 046 (0x8) in DHCP-server, Scope options?

Yes, both options have been set in the DHCP server. What
effect does this have on NT clients that are not using
DHCP? Is there something else that needs to be done in
WINS?

Thanks,

Robert

It's needed for W9x, ME and NT4-clients.
Can you post the ipconfig/all from the server please, and one from a client?

Sorry, our company prohibits the publication of such
information.

If there is something specific I should be looking for,
please explain it to me. I don't see anything different
in the ipconfig output from either an NT or W2K system.

If possible, could we take this off-line from the
community until we find a resolution? Please respond to
my email included in this post.

Thanks,

Robert

That's a new one to me: my company prohibits the publication.
There should be anything wrong with telling us, you're using private IP's
anyway, aren't you?
You might not see an error in there, but there could be one.

I'm just following orders.

My statement of there being no difference between the two
outputs was somewhat misleading. NT does not report what
DNS suffix searches are used, whereas W2K does. Other
than that, all other entries are exactly the same; WINS
server, DHCP server, subnet mask, default gateway, DNS
servers...

Again, what should I be looking for in the outputs that
would lead me to believe that a network setting on the NT
client is causing this issue. Since it is not limited to
a single system, what needs to be done to ALL NT and 9X
systems in order for them to access a share on a
multihomed W2K server?

You should check that the ipconfig/all shows that *everything* is pointing
to the server-IP.
On the server, check the bindingorder of the nics (Network Connections,
advanced, advanced) and make sure the internal nic is on top.
DNS on both servernics should *only* point to your server-IP.
You should have options 003, 006, 015, 044 and 046 (0x8) in DHCP-server,
Scope options. 003, 006 and 044 should point to your server-IP *only*.
NT doesn't rely on DNS.
