NT 4.0 to 2000 Active Directory (Help)

Donnie Barnes

Here is our environment. We have two NT
domains "Imaging" and "FB". Our "Imaging" Domain is our
main domain that all our users logon to. The "FB" Domain
is only used for servers. We would like to upgrade our
Domains to windows 2000 AD mixed mode. We would like the
new Domain to be called lets just say "LAFB.com". We
already have a Windows 2000 AD mixed mode Tree that is
called "LAFB.com". How would it be possible to upgrade
the "Imaging" Domain to windows 2000 and transfer their
users to the "LAFB.com"? We need to be able to keep
these user logons otherwise we would have to visit
hundreds of computer at remote sites all around our
state.

So My questions are:

1) Can I preserve the logons that are on the imaging
domain? Or copy them to the LAFB Domain?

2) What would be the best way of doing what we are trying
to accomplish? Upgrade the PDC and BDC of "Imaging" and
make it a OU or child Domain?

3) Is it possible to copy userid's etc. from one
domain "Imaging" and use it on "LAFB.com"?

4) We are basically trying to get the two Domains we have
into one "LAFB.com" Domain.

Thanks for any assistance you can give me. Appreciate
any information you can send my way.

Thanks
Donnie

Hi Donnie-

Some good info to read up on here:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/prodtechnol/ad/default.asp

Quick answers:

1) Yes, this is an option.
2) This varies per company but I would say no. Migrate users, groups, and
then decomission the old domain after confirmation.
3) Yes.
4) Depends on each company's own plan. This is an option.

There are a couple of things that you can consider here.
Since you already have a 2k domain called lafb.com, it could be changed to
native mode, trusts set up between it and the NT domain/s and use ADMT v2 to
migrate the users/groups/computers/etc into the existing lafb.com domain.
The link below gives you the tool and info on using it;
http://search.microsoft.com/search/results.aspx?st=b&na=88&View=en-us&qu=admt

You could also upgrade the imaging and fb domains to win2k, and at that time
install them as Child domains to lafb.com (ie; fb.lafb.com etc) or separate
trees (domains) within the same forest as lafb.com called fb.com or whatever
you wanted for a name. Users could be granted access to servers in the
other domains.

A lot of this depends on personal preference, bandwidth between these
domains/sites, company political considerations, geographical issues, etc
etc. However if you want all uses in the existing lafb.com domain, then you
would need to do a migration using admt.

Well our LAFB.com Domain is a Tree in our Main offices
Forest and they are in Mixed mode so I think Native mode
would not be an option.

Domains can be at different levels, ie native or mixed, but the Forest
functionality level itself could not be raised until all were at the
required levels. You can have one domain in a forest at native and another
mixed.
